8th Grade Conferences

Student-Led Conferences

Eighth graders are in the process of preparing for parent-student-teacher conferences that they will lead this May.  Our 8th grade advisory program guides students to reflect on student work, progress, and goal setting throughout the school year. Students will lead a conference with their parents/guardians as well as their advisor in May before or after school. Therefore, parents or guardians will be offered an opportunity to meet with a faculty member before the end of the school year.  The students are doing a great job of preparing for their conferences, and we can't wait to meet with everyone later this spring!  Your student's advisor will contact you at the end of April. Please be on the lookout for that message.

AMS Red Out Day

Tuesday, 2/14/17

Pancake Breakfast

Parent Network will be sponsoring a Pancake Breakfast Tuesday, 2/14/17, that includes great toppings and a drink for $3.

The Great Plankton Race & Properties of Matter Unit

A new unit has started in science class with The Great Plankton Race as our opening activity. Competition brackets, pictures and information can be found on the science class website

The new unit is on the  properties of matter and begins our study of chemistry. This unit is also exploring the "gamification" of the science classroom. Students will have opportunities for enrichment or review as needed. Students can earn digital badges for completing certain activities. Also, extra credit is earned by getting stars and leveling up. Each new level increases the amount of extra credit to be applied to the final unit grade. Read more on the science website.  Students are always encouraged to check the classroom timeline when they are absent to review missed science class content.

On Edline, starting Monday, 2/13/17, a new report called "Unit G Progress" will appear with the results of quizzes. At the end of the unit, the accumulated star points will be added to the report.

Heads Up! Student-led Conferences in May

In order to close our 8th grade advisory program and to have time to reflect on middle school academically, each 8th grade student will be preparing to lead a parent-student-teacher conference.  Our 8th grade advisory program has been reflecting on student work, progress, and goal setting while meeting bi-monthly throughout the school year.  Each parent and student will have a student led conference in May after school.

8th Graders Declare Their Independence

To supplement their study of the American Revolution in civics class, eighth graders tackled the complex text The Declaration of Independence in Mrs. Galecki's reading class.  Students focused on closely reading and annotating the text to identify its main ideas and translate it into modern day English.  They showcased their understanding of the historical document by guiding their classmates through a close-reading presentation of an assigned passage. Students explained how specific words and phrases contributed to the both text's meaning and tone.

Because scholars believe that Thomas Jefferson meant for the Declaration to be dramatically performed, students revealed their understanding of the document by completing their own dramatic reading in our makeshift Independence Hall.

Eighth graders were assigned a short passage from the Declaration to practice reading with proper phrasing, pronunciation, emphasis, pause and tone.  As “experts” of the text, students completed an impressive dramatic reading of this important document!  Many students even memorized their passages for extra credit.
