Everyone is so excited for
semi-formal! The dance starts at 7 pm, and is 10 dollars at the door
(which includes a snack and a glowstick!). All proceeds from the dance
are going to the Susan G Komen foundation. Pictures are also going to be
available for $5 per print (prints will be printed and delivered to students at
school sometime in the week after the dance). All students must attend
school on the day of the dance, and all students must have a CURRENT social
permission slip on file with the office. That form is available here under the title “Social
Permission Form”. Please be sure to fill one out for your student so that
they can come and join the fun on Friday!

Courthouse Field Trips
Last week, 8th grade students traveled to the
Allegheny County Courthouse for a field trip. In their Civics classes,
students were introduced to the criminal and civil court systems prior to their
visit. Upon their arrival at the courthouse, students were greeted by a
Deputy Attorney General of Allegheny County, David Spurgeon. Mr. Spurgeon
talked to students about his role in the judicial branch and warned them about
the consequences of drug and alcohol related crimes. Next, students
visited real criminal court rooms to observe trials in action. Some
judges even invited the students to speak with them in their chambers about
their job. The day concluded with a brief tour of Pittsburgh neighborhoods
including Oakland, the North Shore, the South Side, and the Strip District to
help students prepare for their ongoing Pittsburgh research project.

Pi Day 03.14.14
Pi Day
is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “Ï€”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant —
the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is
approximately 3.14159.
Pi has
been calculated to over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point. As an
irrational and transcendental number, it will continue infinitely without
repetition or pattern. While only a handful of digits are needed for typical
calculations, Pi’s infinite nature makes it a fun challenge to memorize, and to
computationally calculate more and more digits.
Tomorrow
the students will celebrate 3-14, or PI day by listening to PI day songs,
competing in a hula hoop contest, eating round food, and analyzing the
gloriously irrational number pi through an activity called “The Pi is
Right”. See http://www.piday.org/
for further information about Pi and the global celebration! Extra credit
is available for students who memorize the first 31 digits of pi (pi day
pencils with the number were passed out last Friday when we graphed the
relationship between circumference and diameter) and/or bring in round food to
feed 15 students in their class. At the end of the day, extra donations
will be given to an area organizations (if there is any food remaining).
For
homework, students will have to develop a pi day poem, song, rap, comic strip,
or picture that includes 3 facts they learned about Pi this week. (Due
March 18)
