The speaker said, "you are the last generation to hear about the Holocaust
first hand." The videoconference connected with the 8th grade reading
curriculum’s Diary of Anne Frank unit.

Honorable Matt Smith visits AMS Grade 8
8th grade students have been learning about the legislative branch in civics class. Senator Matt Smith visited Avonworth to discuss his role in the Pennsylvania legislature.

United Nations and Genocide Studies
In preparation for their study
of The Diary of Anne Frank, the 8th grade is researching
modern examples of genocides. We began by reading the United Nation Convention
on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide, and are now researching modern
examples of genocide to see if these individual incidents qualify as genocide based
on the Convention passed by the United Nations in 1948. Although it is a tough
topic, it helps students to understand the broader impact of genocide and how
the Holocaust changed how the world prosecutes and prevents genocide today.

Keystone Exams
Mark your calendars:
The 8th graders who are enrolled in Integrated Math I (Algebra), will
take the Keystone Exam on May 21st and 22nd during periods A-C. Each of the 2 modules have 23 multiple choice
questions and 4 constructive response questions. Students may use a graphing or scientific
calculators on this test. To review for
this test, please encourage your students to continue working on the Keystone
Challenge for all IM 1 students. There
are 24 areas of review available on Study Island. Students are required to complete at least 12
areas by May 5th. For students who need extra assistance, Ms. Costantino and
high school tutors are available to help. For more information on the keystone
exams, please go to www.pde.state.pa.us
