Flowers for Algernon

English students are beginning to read the short story “Flowers for Algernon”.  This story, written by Daniel Keyes, is told from the perspective of a man named Charlie Gordon.  Charlie is a 37-year-old man with an intellectual disability who wants more than anything to “be smart”.  He is offered the chance of a lifetime, and students are asked to consider the impact of getting and then losing something of great importance, along with the value of intelligence and how friendships can be defined.
